Review update for current version: 5.4.0
TERRIBLE for dropcam users. The app, especially on the iPad, is much less user-friendly and is missing many key pieces of functionality that were available in the original (and far superior) dropcam app.
1. On iPad, the ability to quickly "scrub" through the video timeline has been removed. This was the single most useful aspect of the old dropcam app. Please bring it back ASAP.
2. On iPad & iPhone, the thumbnails on the "Video History" list are so small you cant see any motion within the animated thumbnail which makes it impossible to pick out any events of interest and therefore makes the thumbnails completely useless.
3. The "Video History" list only shows events from the current day in the visible list. To see events from other days you must swipe left/right. The scrolling timeline view of the dropcam app (iPad version) was a much better and intuitive user experience.
4. The "Resume" functionality when viewing a clip from the Video History is inexplicably dumb. Again, this is an area where the old event timeline on the previous dropcam app worked far better.
5. There is no way to zoom in while viewing a clip from video history. Very frustrating.
6. The ability to save clips, screenshots, and share via email has been removed. Why? There is also no way to view previously saved clips. Seriously.
7. Still no way to define activity zones from within the iOS apps. Still need to use the Flash-based website to do this. Your competitors (Simplicam) can do this.
8. Video contrast is much darker in the new app. While this gives the appearance of a slightly improved video image in bright daylight, it reduces the ability to see details in low-light conditions.
9. The new app does not show you the zoom level (i.e. 1.2X) when zooming in. This was actually a useful feature.
10. The camera on/off switch is located way too close to the settings icon. Its very easy to click that when you are just trying to access the app settings.
11. The timestamp of a motion detection event has been removed from the notification text. For example, "Activity was detected by camera at 5:01 PM" - because of this there is no way to see what time the event actually happened and find it within the video history.
12. When swiping an event notification, the app should open up and take you directly to that event on the video history. Sadly it does not.
13. As others have reported, when streaming live video the new app BURNS through battery like no other app Ive ever seen. The dropcam app doesnt do this.
14. Using the new Nest app simultaneously while other users are using the old dropcam app can knock your camera offline, requiring either a reboot of the camera or a reboot of your internet router to fix the problem. (This may be fixed now, but I havent been brave enough to test it.)
Please either fix these critical issues or please leave the old dropcam app in service indefinitely.
